How to prevent Fungus Gnats in your houseplants

How to prevent Fungus Gnats in your houseplants

Ever seen bugs flying around your plants? They're most likely Fungus Gnats! While these buzzing blights are not usually harmful for you or your plants, they are VERY ANNOYING.  Here's a few steps you can take to prevent these nasties from turning up in your soil.

REPOT YOUR PLANTS INTO WELL DRAINING POTS

When soil stays too moist, for too long, these little critters start to appear. If you're an avid waterer, avoid Fungus Gnats by checking your plants' drainage. Can water freely escape the bottom of your pot? Usually a nice large drainage hole at the bottom is enough, but if there's more than one, it's an added bonus! Use self-watering pots? It may be time to give them the flick!

CHECK NEW SOIL AND PLANTS

Did you know that Fungus Gnats can hide in bags of soil, and even in the roots of nursery plants? In the store, your potential new green babe is kept consistently moist, and is often clustered with other plants, making the perfect home for pesky gnats. Thoroughly check any new plant related purchase for gnats; you'll see them buzzing around the top of the soil.

KEEP YOUR PLANT HEALTHY

Healthy plants don't attract pests, so it's always best to get to the 'root' cause! Keep your plants well fed, happy and nourished with Grow Concentrate and Support Pellets all year round. Protect Spray is also great, as it will keep your leaves shiny and dust free!
