Colder weather deserves a pick-me-up in our humble opinion. What better way to bring some cheer, than to see a plant throw out fresh flowers?! While many plants take a nap from flowering during the colder months, some indoor beauties love to strut their stuff when it’s chilly. These four winter-flowering plants are a game-changer for budding plant parents - they'll brighten up your space and throw out new leaves and flowers!
1. Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)
Why we love it: This is an all time fave. You can get some monster Spaths with huge glossy leaves. We love that they have these classic white blooms (that look like mini Sydney Opera House sails).
How to make them grow: Peace lilies will thrive in winter under an Instant Sun Grow Lamp! You want to keep the soil slightly moist but never soggy. If the leaves start to droop, it's a good sign your Spath needs a drink. To get them to push out new flowers, drop the temp slightly overnight to mimic natural winter cues - it triggers flowering!
2. Cyclamen
Why we love it: This one is a great one for mums. It's cute, has fluttery petals and throw fresh shades of pink, red, and white—plus it's got heart-shaped leaves, making it a perfect gift to brighten up the winter blues.
How to make them grow: Did you know that cyclamen love the cold?! If you're in the chilly southern states, it'll be easy to keep them in a cool, bright spot (away from heaters). Hot tip: water from the bottom when the soil feels dry, and use Grow Concentrate every time you water. Don’t let water sit in the crown of the plant—it’s a drama queen about rot.
3. Phalaenopsis Orchid
Why we love it: While these are notoriously difficult to care for, they have incredible long-lasting flowers that look like butterflies. They're just a timeless, elegant solution to give any space a sense of quiet glamour.
How to keep orchids thriving: Keep orchids in a spot with filtered morning light. Use a chunky potting mix, and let the potting mix just dry before watering. Dropping the temp to around 10°C at night for a few weeks will help to trigger buds, if you have an Orchid that's waiting to bloom. Combine it with our Orchid Kit for leaf health and growth.
Tips for Blooming in Winter:
-
Light is key! Use our Instant Sun Grow lights; it will help to give plants the energy they need to throw our fresh blooms. Otherwise, place your plants near a bright window, but out of harsh sun. Winter light is weaker, so clean your windows and rotate your plants weekly.
-
Don’t overwater. Cooler temps = slower growth = less thirst.
-
Use a bloom-friendly plant food. the Bloom Concentrate in our orchid kit is perfect for all flowering plants because it's full of flower-promoting hormones, natural phosphorus and no harsh chemicals.
